2/27 MS Physics Recording - Levers

https://youtu.be/-YEra42VY80

2/27 MS Physics update and homework due 3/5

Hi folks, Today we did a bit more with simple machines by taking a look at levers.  We talked about the three different kinds of levers and spend a good bit of time exploring how they work. For homework this week take a look at the lever and pulley chapter in the enclosed ebook.  Do all the questions at the end of the Levers chapter and do questions 1 - 4 in the Pulleys chapter.   ALSO answer the following questions.  (Answers are below) 1. What happened to the effort force as the fulcrum got closer to the load?  2. What happened to the effort force as the fulcrum got farther from the load?  3. What happened to the load force as the fulcrum got closer to the load?  4. How about when the fulcrum got farther from the load?  5. If you wanted to lift an object that you couldn't lift by yourself, where would you put the fulcrum? Close to, or far from the load?  6.  Draw a picture of all three classes of lever.

Spending some time outside for Physics

Hi folks, We are going to be spending some time outside today and it's going to be a bit chilly so please dress with the weather in mind. See you all soon! Best, Jim Mueller (919) 907-3217

Fwd: 2/19 HS Physics update and homework due 2/26

Hi folks, This week we dove a bit deeper into the concept of energy and work by taking a look at simple machines.  We did a lab were we observed the relationship between force, distance and work as it applies to pulleys.   By the way, there WILL be a quiz next week.  It's been awhile so I'll give you some tips as to what to study for.  Definition of energy, PE and KE, that wacky roller coaster problem, definition of work etc.  Don't worry about this pulley, simple machine stuff yet.  It will be on an upcoming quiz but not this next one. For homework this week, Read this website , starting on the introduction page and finishing on the terminology page (just keep clicking through). These question refer to the reading or the lecture. 1. What is the definition of a simple machine? 2. What are 4 things simple machines do?  (Looking for the list on the second page of the website.) 3. What are 5 features of a simple machine? 4.  Name 6 simple mach...

Class is ON for today

Hi folks, It looks like the worst of the  weather is supposed to hold off until this evening.  With that in mind, I'm going to hold class.  However, please be safe.  If you are coming from a far distance or just don't feel safe, feel free to skip class today.  Also, if you wish to pick your child up early to miss the afternoon weather that is perfectly fine as well. Best, Jim Mueller (919) 907-3217

Weather tomorrow

Hi all, It's looking like we are in for a bit of an adventure tomorrow.  According to most of the weather sites, we aren't supposed to see anything until 3:00 tomorrow.  However, for some reason schools are shutting down like crazy all over the area.  I'll keep an eye out tonight and tomorrow morning and I'll let you know as soon as I can whether or not we will be holding class tomorrow. Have a good night everyone. Best, Jim Mueller (919) 907-3217

2/13 MS Physics Recording - Energy Efficiency

Part 1 Part 2

2/13 MS Chemistry update and homework due 2/20

Hi folks, Today we really got into energy by discussing the concepts of potential energy, kinetic energy and conservation of energy. For homework this week, read the "Kinetic and Potential Energy" chapter in the book which starts on page 100. Do all the questions on page 108 and 109. We will have a quiz next week so be sure to study this week's and last week's homework. You may also want to make sure you know conservation of momentum as well.

No worries. We're so glad you made it out of the mud! Physics Class is CANCELED

Hi folks,   I hate to do this but I need to cancel class today.   2 reasons, one, weather is looking very iffy so there's some concern there. Two, I am literally stuck in the mud in Cary and I'm not going to make it in time for class. So very sorry!   Best, Jim
