9/26 MS Physics recording - Nerf Gun Lab

Part 1 Part 2

9/26 MS Physics update and homework due 10/3

Image
Hi folks, Today we put our newly discovered concept of speed to the test by having the students figure out, on their own, how to find the speed of a dart shot from a nerf dart gun.  It was a bit of a challenge but at the end everyone collected a nice set of data.  Turns out those little darts really go! For homework this week please answer the following questions about today's class and lab. 1.  What is the definition of precision? 2.  What is the definition of accuracy? 3.  Draw a picture that illustrates precision. 4.  Draw a picture that illustrates accuracy. 5.  Draw a picture that illustrates accuracy AND precision. 6.  Draw a picture the illustrates poor accuracy and poor precision. Answer these questions based on today's lab. 1.  What two things did you have to measure to find the speed of the darts? 2.  What 3 things introduced the greatest amount of error into your data.  In other words, where was it the most difficult to b...

9/19 Physics Class Recording - Motion

Part 1 Part  2

9/19 MS Physics update and homework due 9/26

Hi folks, Today we began our discussion of motion. For the next several weeks, we will be looking a a variety of ways to describe and predict motion. Today we took a look at how motion is relative and explored the concepts of speed. To get the hang of speed at the end of class today we went outside and measure the distance and time of everyone's throw. We have a few excellent throwers in this group! For homework this week: Answer the following questions (you may need to rewatch parts of the video.) Be sure to answer them well because they will probably be on next week's quiz! Study hard! 1. What is the definition of distance? 2. What is the definition of speed? 3. What two things do you need to measure to find speed? (What did we measure when we found out how fast folks threw the ball?) 4. What is meant by saying "motion is relative"? 5. Are you moving right now? Explain why you are moving and explain why you are not movi...

Physics Class Outside!!!

Hi folks, For part of physics class today, we are going to be doing some things outside.  Be sure to dress ready to spend about 30 minutes or more outside. See you all soon! Best, Jim Mueller (919) 907-3217

9/12 MS Physics Recording - Introduction

Part 1 Part 2

9/12 Physics Class update, homework due 9/19 and the text for the class

Hi everyone, It was a pleasure meeting everyone today and getting the year rolling.   Each week after class, I'll be sending an email with a quick update as to what we did in class as well as the homework assignment for the week.  I'll be sending a recording of the class in a separate email as well, so that folks can use it to review or to catch up if they have missed a class. This week we began class by spending time going over the expectations of the class.  How does homework work, when are quizzes and that kind of thing.  I also spent time telling everyone some good tips on what to do each week in order to prepare for the quizzes. We then went over the year subject by subject so that the students could get a nice overview as to what the year will look like. Finally we spent a bit of time on what science is and how it works. For homework this week: Read pages 5 - 12 in the .pdf. Do all questions on page 13.  Also, study your notes and memorize any vocabulary. ...
