9/12 Physics Class update, homework due 9/19 and the text for the class

Hi everyone,

It was a pleasure meeting everyone today and getting the year rolling.

Each week after class, I'll be sending an email with a quick update as to what we did in class as well as the homework assignment for the week.  I'll be sending a recording of the class in a separate email as well, so that folks can use it to review or to catch up if they have missed a class.

This week we began class by spending time going over the expectations of the class.  How does homework work, when are quizzes and that kind of thing.  I also spent time telling everyone some good tips on what to do each week in order to prepare for the quizzes.

We then went over the year subject by subject so that the students could get a nice overview as to what the year will look like.

Finally we spent a bit of time on what science is and how it works.

For homework this week:

Read pages 5 - 12 in the .pdf.
Do all questions on page 13.  Also, study your notes and memorize any vocabulary.

ALSO:

Answer the following questions based on today's lecture.

1.  What is the definition of science we used today in class?
2.  What is the point of science?  In other words, what is its job?
3.  What is wrong with the definition of hypothesis in the book compared to the definition I gave in class?
4.  What are the three different steps a hypothesis must go through to become a theory?
5.  What is meant by peer review?
6.  How did the game we played at the end of class today relate to science?

Remember!  Be sure to answer all questions carefully they may (and probably will be) on next week's quiz.

Best,
