12/19 MS Physics update and homework due 1/9

Hi folks,

Today we spent time covering the new concept of momentum.  We also did a lab today where the students were able to see the effects of mass on momentum.

Happy holidays everyone!!!!

For your first homework assignment of 2020, please do the following questions.  I've provided the answers in an attached pdf.

1.  What is the definition of momentum?

2.  How is momentum different than inertia?

3.  If something's mass increases does it's momentum get larger or smaller?

4.  If something's velocity decreases does it's momentum get larger or smaller?

5.  Which has more momentum, a squirrel traveling at 15 mph or a Honda traveling at 15 mph?  Why?

6.  Which has more momentum, a bowling ball moving at 20 mph or a bowling ball moving at 5 mph?  Why?

7.  Which has more momentum a walrus or a penguin?  Why?

8.  In today's lab, what was the point of the car that just sat on the track?

9.  In today's lab, when you increased the mass of the car, what did you see happen?  Why?

10.  What did today's lab have to do with momentum?

11.  You may have observed, the last time you went sledding, that a sled with two people in it went farther than a sled with one person in it.  Why?  Be sure to tell me using the words momentum and mass.
