1/30 MS Physics Recording - Energy and Work

Part 1 Part 2

1/30 MS Physics update and homework due 2/6

Hi folks, Today we dove deeper into our strange new world of energy by taking about how energy can change forms (heat, sound, electricity, nuclear) and by discovering what work is by pushing my car. For homework this week read the chapter "Defining Energy" in the Bite-Size Physics book and do the 10 questions at the end of the chapter. Also, answer the following questions. 1. In class, I went over a several step scenario where energy changed forms from one to another. Create a similar scenario of your own that includes at least 6 steps. Some steps will have to be the same (E.G. you must have the Sun in there) but try to do something different than the one I did in class. Pictures are welcome! :) 2. Eat a sandwich. Tell me the path that energy followed for all the ingredients of the sandwich to your stomach. See if you can get a nice coigeepishicken sandwich. :) 3. Fill in the blanks with the following words: energy, force, work, distance, eating ...

Spending some time outside for Physics today!!

Hi folks, We are going to be doing some things outside for physics today so please come prepared for the weather. See you all soon! Best, Jim Mueller (919) 907-3217

1/22 MS Physics Recording - Introduction to Energy

Part 1 Part 2

1/22 MS Physics update and homework due 1/29

Hi folks, Today we started our brand new unit on energy.  This is a bit more difficult than motion since it is so much more abstract.  We'll move our way through it though and get to understand it pretty well by the time we are done.  Today's lecture introduced the concept and we will be working through the basics of energy for the next few weeks. For homework this week please do the enclosed .pdf.  Answers are on a second .pdf.

No Recording this week for MS Physics

Hi folks, Almost the entire class was taken up with the "Scavenger Hunt" this week so there was no recording.   However, we did start class with  this video    It's an excellent overview of what we've been covering this year applied to car safety.  I stopped the video at 12:22 when he begins talking about energy. 1/16 MS Physics update and homework due 1/23

Hi folks, I gave the students a Newton's Scavenger Hunt today where they had to use things in the classroom to illustrate many of the concepts they've learned this year. They really worked well taking their knowledge and applying it in order to show me how each concept worked. I've included the questions below if you want to take a look. Homework for this week is to find a video game, a movie or a book and use it to provide examples of the following concepts. Feel free to have fun with this and if you can find an example of how physics is "wrong" in the movie, game or book, (cough, cough, the most recent Star Wars)  that may be even more fun!  You can use the same or different books, movies, etc. if you wish. 1. Impulse 2. Momentum 3. Impulse causing a momentum change. 4. Conservation of momentum. 5. Newton's 3rd Law 6. Newton's 2nd Law

1/9 MS Physics update and homework due 1/16

Hi folks, Today we had quite a bit of fun with our new concept of impulse.  Impulse is the amount of time a force is applied to something.  The more impulse something receives, the more its momentum changes.  To show this, we went outside and shot spitballs!  The farther back the spitball was in the straw, the farther away the spitball flew!   We also did the famous egg drop to illustrate how force can be effected by time and by momentum. 2 assignments for homework this week. 1.  Read the Impulse and Momentum chapter in the text book and do the questions at the end of the chapter. 2.  Do the questions in this email. Questions: 1.  In your own words, describe to me what shooting spitballs has to do with impulse? 2.  Use the concept of impulse to explain why it's so important to follow through when doing some sort of a sporting activity. 3.  During the egg drop activity, you used several strategies to try to keep your egg from br...

Outside for a bit in Physics today

Hi folks, We are going to spend about 20 minutes outside today so please be sure to wear coats.  It's going to be a bit chilly today. See you all soon! Best, Jim Mueller (919) 907-3217
